Boat club does its part to keep riverfront clean

NATIONAL PARK Even a windy and rainy Saturday couldn't stop the National Park Boat Club from doing what it does all year Ð giving back to the community.

About two dozen members were out this weekend to clean the beach along the Delaware River at Red Bank Battlefield.

The effort, organized by boat club member Wells Reeve, resulted in the filling of about 500 trash bags with debris picked up along the shore.

"We come up and down the river and see this pollution," said Reeve, a National Park resident. "People come from all over to be here and it shouldn't look like this."

Reeve said he found oil cans, buckets with tar, countless empty bottles and other trash. The cleanup effort will be scheduled every spring, said Reeve.

"People at the boat club don't hesitate to volunteer for a cause like this," Reeve said as he picked trash from the beach.

Even Mayor Pat Koloski, a boat club member for the past six years, was out with a bag in hand.

"This is about pride," she said. "We take pride in our town."

She explained that a lot of this debris washes up to the shore and comes from boaters who dump things as they are on board their vessels.

"There have been a lot of surprising things we picked up," said Koloski. "This is our effort to make sure people get the message that we do love our town."

Keep the beach clean, she said, "We have to live here."

This particular effort just showed the way this non-profit organization operates.

Each year, they sponsor a family around the holidays Ð providing food, presents and other necessities. They also host various fundraisers in which all profits go to different charities.

"We just do what we can to help the community," said member Frank Poper, a 27-year-old West Deptford resident who was out Saturday morning to clean the beach. "I think it's great to see the smiles on people's faces. You know you're helping them out."

The National Park Boat Club is a non-profit organization located on Riverview Road and has some 100 active members. For more information, go the group's Web site at www.nationalparkboatclub.com.

Commodore's Message

Boating season is once again upon us. The docks are in and boats are starting to appear. Thanks to Tom and his boaters for getting it done. Some members have been working hard to get our club and grounds ready for Opening Day on April 25th. If can help with any of the items still needing to be completed, see Limey Thomasson, head Trustee.

Our next big event is Opening Day. I would like to see many of our members in attendance. If you haven’t been down to the Club in a while, Opening Day, would be a good time to come out and renew friendships and show support for your Club.

Our Club has gotten some recent good press and I want to thank our members for getting involved in these activities. It is important not only for our Club but for the community in general.
